The brown tweed from the blazer that was my first attempt at sewing.\u00a0 The cotton print with yellow ducks that was part of a baby quilt. \u00a0The peach lace from the Easter dress Papaw drove 20 minutes to buy me.<\/p>\n<p>The story of a family.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Each moment \u00a0was stitched together with others until it formed \u00a0one beautiful, warm memory that wraps itself around me and transports me to\u00a0 lovely\u00a0 times that would have otherwise been forgotten\u2026save for the foresight\u00a0 of \u00a0Mamaw\u00a0 and the talent of her fingers.\u00a0 Fingers that were bent with arthritis.\u00a0 Wrinkled by years of picking cotton. \u00a0Nimble from sorting through mail as the postmaster.<\/p>\n<p>Fingers that caressed my cheek when I was a baby and felt for the memory of what I looked like when she was too old to see.\u00a0 Fingers that I now see on my mom\u2019s beautifully worn hands and the fingers that I\u2019m beginning to see on my own.\u00a0 Fingers that cut and sewed and pieced fragments and memories into this narrative that I clutch on days when I need to remember how blessed and loved I am.<\/p>\n<p>Fingers that continue to touch me, decades later, \u00a0as I hold on to this treasure of love.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Homemade cotton quilts have a smell \u2013 a \u00a0mix of dust, smoke from winter fireplaces, hints of grass and soil from summer picnics and the musty fragrance of a cedar chest.
