Walls of Dubrovnik

IMG_5045

We build walls so easily. So naturally.

Without realizing it, our hands pick up stones and mindlessly lay them one upon another.   One for grief. Another for betrayal.  Another for shame, abandonment, loss, disappointment,,,

Year after year these walls reach higher and higher though we instinctively know what we truly need and what we deeply desire. A gift that is necessary for life but difficult to give and receive.

Connection.

So we send out tentative tendrils of a look, a touch, a word….hoping for someone to respond.

Someone to reach over the wall, dig under it, knock out a stone…whatever it might take to connect to our hearts.

We’re blind to the way we’ve constructed the world around us for “safety” and are ignorant to the way it can so quickly become suffocating. We become protected yet alone. Unchallenged but dull.

                                                                                     Demolishing defenses comes slowly.

                                                                                     Purposefully.

                                                                                     Painfully and fearfully but…

                                                                                    WISELY.

Maybe time can teach us that our walls, though they may have had a purpose at one point, have outlived those purposes and safety isn’t nearly as important as love.
